Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars
The nominated actor smacked the comedian after a GI Jane joke directed at Jada Pinkett Smith
“Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me,” Chris Rock said, cooly, calmly, after Smith casually walked up the ramp to the mic and gave Rock a roundhouse slap at the Oscars.
Rock had just delivered a joke about Jada Pinkett’s closely shaven hairdo.
“Jada, I love ya. I can’t wait to see you in GI Jane 2,” Rock quipped.
Initially Mr. Smith laughed.
Mrs Smith, however, did not appreciate the joke and soon the man first known as the Fresh Prince marched to the stage.
Here it is in slo mo:
“KEEP MY WIFE’S NAME OUT OF YOUR FUCKING MOUTH,” Smith shouted from his fluffy chair.
“Wow, dude. It was a GI Jane joke,” Rock explained from the stage. But Smith repeated his threat.
“I’m going to,” Rock acquiesced. Then it all dawned on him, “that is the greatest night in the history of television.”
Eventually, the Oscar for Documentary Feature was awarded to Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson his fantastic “Summer of Soul.”
A Pennsylvania State Rep had this to say of the startling moment:
Some time later, Smith won the Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role.
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said, alluding to his now-iconic bitch slap.
“At your highest moment be careful because that’s when the Devil comes for you,” Smith said Denzel Washington warned him earlier in the day.
Smith then apologized through tears to the Academy and his fellow nominees.
“I hope the Academy invites me back,” the actor said through laughter.
Even though it was all real, perhaps the best reaction goes to a former pro wrestler:
There were, however many other good takes. Here are a few:
